Now the big 4, New York, London, Milan and Paris, have shown their designer collections for Autumn/Winter 14/15 FashionPR picks the 12 key trends that define the season…
1. Fluff
Deep pile textures galore - a very strong trend spied in all four cities, fluffy, shaggy jackets, coats and collars gave a very tactile feel to the collections. This included furs; fake and real, shearling and feathers.
2. Blood Red
Red really made a statement this season and came into play across many collections; we are talking a bright, strong primary red worn as one block colour or as an accent.
3. Nod to Mod
Milan in particular displayed plenty of mod / 60’s references and the shift shape dress was out in full force. Elsewhere plenty of mini skirts teamed with opaque tights and knee-high boots reinforced the 60’s influence.
4. Cubism
Whether it was squares of patchwork or rectangles of block tones there was a distinct Cubist influence to this season’s designs.
5. Tan-tastic
Tan, caramel and camel were plastered all over the catwalks and combined with earthy browns and deep blacks. Another popular and reoccurring shade to note was dark navy. Providing a less commercial seasonal palette some designers brightened-up their collections with eye-popping brights such as lemon, hot pink and lime green.
6. Knee-highs
The big brands championed knee high boots as the investment accessory of the season. From blood red to burgundy and brown to black they either finished at the knee or lower thigh to create a lean, leggy look.
7. Fairytale Fantasy
From fairytales Beauty and the Beast and Little Red Riding Hood to the Sci-Fi Star Wars and the Universe at large the world of imaginative fantasy could be found inspiring many a designer this season.
8. Statement Coats
Capes, cloaks, duster coats, classic toggle coats and blanket wraps whatever your coat choice this season make sure it’s super long, luxurious and dramatic.
9. Lace-Ups
From lace-up trainers, flats and heels to lace-up detailing on trousers, belts and collars – it seems lace-up fastenings are the way to go.
10. Mixed Media
Print has been a big trend for a number of seasons, taking it one step further is an arty collage effect mixing up embellishments; jewels, sequins, embroidery, with various textures especially velvet and tones to create works of art with a unique flavour.
11. Head to Toe Knit
Chunky, ribbed knits dominated the Paris catwalks from tunic and trouser combo’s to floor-length designs reminiscent of the 1990’s. Those not so brave could opt for a simple rib knit sweater, they were in plentiful supply too.
12. Quilting
Adding to the cosy, enveloping mood designers included plenty of quilted pieces including jackets, coats and skirts. A trend that New Yorker’s will no doubt lap-up after a particularly cold and snowy winter.
