Behold, as we enter an era of chic elegance

There’s nothing quite like a recession to readdress our spending habits as marketers know all too well. Quality, bespoke, craftsmanship and timeless style are just a few of the key phrases coming out of the woodwork as the ‘buy less buy quality’ ethos hits home.


This timeless elegance du jour can be found in the latest exhibitions from; Cecil Beaton Portraits at the NPG to Grace Kelly: Style Icon at the V&A alongside the 30’s sleek stage production of Noel Coward’s Private Lives to Tom Ford’s film debut ‘A Single Man’.


Adding to the impeccably chic mix is the recent release of Louise Baring's Norman Parkinson: A Very British Glamour which features a selection of Parkinson’s photographs – all high couture set against sprawling backdrops.


Elsewhere fashion designers are picking up on the mood resulting in fuss-free designs that are clean cut, minimal and of course rather elegant. From Marc Jacobs in New York to Celine in Paris, you could well say that Phoebe Philo’s second collection for Celine pretty much summed up the A/W 10/11 season with simplified classics that focused on cut and quality. Other designers doing refined chic include Chloe, Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton and Jaeger.
