Makepiece Sheep to chic knitwear
Makepiece
Sheep to chic knitwear company returns to London Fashion Week reinvigorated and full of the joys of winter.
Shortest day, its AW2012 collection contains intricately braided knitted dresses, colour contrast inserts and layering and lots of soft, cowled and snooded necklines.
It’s a walk in the wild woods with a canny red riding hood, aware of her charms, unafraid of wolves, clear sighted and strong against the cold.
The season’s condensed colour palette; red, berry and midnight, is accompanied by sparse neutrals. These are the rich colours laid down by autumn and abbreviated by winter. They’re keeping alive a tiny burning cinder until spring.
Makepiece retuns to LFW after a season spent installing itself in a new studio and opening a new shop. The label feels that it’s consolidated its position and is going from strength to strength.
‘We’ve been very busy developing our place in the world. With our new workshop and new shop we have a new creative springboard.’ Said Makepiece designer Nicola Sherlock-Windle.

Makepiece was established in 2004 by Beate Kubitz and Nicola Sherlock-Windle in the Pennine town of Todmorden.
The label produces two seasonal collections a year, a classic range of accessories including unique innovative knitted shrugs and a collection of knitted wedding dresses, shrugs and capes.
Makepiece designs are inspired by the Pennine landscape in which it is created. The label is known for its beautiful imagery shot on location in the Calder Valley.
It's a label designed to be ethical and sustainable with:
- 100% British wool, mohair and alpaca. Wool is naturally renewable and biodegradeable;
- Undyed yarns from our own flock of low impact Shetland sheep;
- Many undyed yarn colours;
- Coloured yarns dyed 20 miles from where they’re knitted – in the UK to EU Standards (no azo dyes, no heavy metals, effluent cleansing)
- Knitted in Yorkshire using hand powered machinery;
- Low road miles;
- Labelled with sheep tags carrying yarn wraps to ensure garments can be fixed so they ‘re used as long as possible. Paper labels are post consumer waste printed with vegetable dyes;
- Designed to be beyond trend and stay fresh for years.
