Keeping Up Appearances:

Fashion and Class Between the Wars

Catherine Horwood

For Immediate Release, £12.99 Paperback New Edition, 978-0-7524-6050-5

A Nostalgic look at one of the most glamourous periods in British

history

During the 1920’s and 1930’s there was no more important task than for one to look their best. As a nation we have always been concerned with our appearance and the image we portray, but during the inter-war years this was more important than ever. The seemingly insignificant details of ones wears could convey a lack of breeding if worn incorrectly, from ties and braces to gloves and hats. Both men and women always looked their best, hoping to impress their friends or employers with their newest and most glamourous attire.

Catherine Horwood’s engagingly written account of fashion in this period explores these concepts and reveals not only how we dressed but why. She peers into the intimate lives and anxieties of the middle classes as they dressed to impress, and how important appearance was during this evocative period in history.
