1st March 2010 THE GREAT BRITISH HOLD UP Sales of fashion holdups soar by 200 per cent at Selfridges as British women opt out of sensible tights in favour of sexier hosiery
La Perla’s ‘Gemma’ hold up £74, available at Selfridges ______________________________________________________________________________________ Selfridges, the UK’s leading department store reports a 200 per cent increase in sales of fashion holdups (year on year) as more women opt out of sensible tights for every day wear, in favour of sexier hosiery.
Hold ups are no longer reserved for special occasions only, as brands including Wolford and La Perla encourage women to consider hold ups as an every day choice, extending their offer to include Marino Wool and lace top 10 Denier.
Women are currently at their most adventurous when it comes to their choice of fashion hosiery, with seamed, lace, fishnet and polka dot holdups all giving the traditional tight a run for its money.
Wolford’s black lace ‘Souvenir’ (£48) and La Perla’s lace top sheer hold up (£19), are Selfridges’ current best sellers at Selfridges stores in Birmingham, Manchester and London.

· The business was founded by American entrepreneur Gordon Selfridge in 1909 and run by him until he retired in 1940 and took on the role of President. Gordon Selfridge died in 1947. He and his wife Hilary are closely involved with the development and growth of the company and their daughter Alannah is Creative Director. the· In year ended 31 January 2008, Selfridges’ sales rose by 10 per cent to £655 million and profit grew by 30 per cent to £84.1 million. · Galen Weston is Chairman of Selfridges and, in January 2004, Allan Leighton was appointed Deputy Chairman. · Paul Kelly became Chief Executive of Selfridges in February 2004. Before that, Paul was Managing Director of Brown Thomas in Dublin for ten years. He has worked with the Weston family for over 20 years. Galen Chairman of the premier luxury goods company which, as well as·Weston is Selfridges, includes Holt Renfrew in Canada and Brown Thomas in Ireland.
