Celebrating the Best of the UK Fashion IndustryAt the Oscars of the fashion industry the winners of the 21st Drapers Fashion Awards were announced last night at Grosvenor House, London. The stylish event, presented by Strictly Come Dancing’s Tess Daly, was attended by key industry figures and celebrities to celebrate and commend the very best in fashion. It was a night of double celebrations for two lucky companies; the St Albans boutique The Dressing Room scooped two awards – Womenswear Retailer of the Year and Independent Retailer of the Year and retailer White Stuff walked off with awards for Best New Store or Department for their George Street store in Edinburgh, as well as the Best Shopper Experience Award. And continuing the double theme, award for Smaller Etailer of the Year went for the second year in a row to specialist A Suit That Fits. Set up by two school friends, Warren Bennett and David Hathiramani, A Suit That Fits offers customers the flexibility to design individually hand-tailored suits and shirts over the internet or in a branch at affordable prices. Best New Business was awarded to independent retailer Garment Quarter, which opened its doors for the first time in October 2010 in Bristol. The store is a new and innovative fashion boutique, which brings together luxury designers and one off pieces from the catwalk. Notes to editors Drapers is 124 years old and as one of the longest serving fashion bibles in the business, the Drapers Fashion Awards hold great kudos with the key players in the sector. This is the 21st annual Drapers Fashion Awards, the UK fashion industry’s equivalent to the Oscars. What started as a small scale, lunch time event aimed solely at independent retailers has grown into a major gala celebration with 21 categories recognising the achievements of not just indies, but of our dynamic high street, our innovative brands and of fashion etailers. Over the years, the event has hosted all of the major leaders of the industry as well as honouring some outstanding individuals – from Arcadia owner Sir Philip Green and Next and George at Asda creator George Davies, to designer Jeff Banks and New Look founder Tom Singh. In researching the history of the Drapers Fashion Awards it is clear to see that our 21 years of winners share a common passion for the industry. All worked tirelessly to achieve their goals and all could demonstrate great innovation as well as solid top-line sales and profit growth. What our 21-year history proves is that successful businesses are born out of both boom and bust times and that whatever the economic climate, having your achievements recognised by your peers is invaluable.
