The Legendary Y-Front Goes FemaleJOCKEY CELEBRATES 75th ANNIVERSARY BY LAUNCHINGY-FRONT RANGE FOR WOMEN
For the first time in its 75 year history, Jockey, the original makers of the Y-Front pant, are updating the legendary brief by introducing a new range… especially for the ladies!
Until now the Jockey Y-Front has been limited to men-only ranges but the number one selling underwear brand in the world – worn by leading men like David Beckham, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp - is introducing it’s first ever women’s range in time to celebrate the 75th anniversary this month.
The new range will be available in four striking colours - Camilla pink, berry bloom pink, impressionist blue, indigo and fluorite (light green) and is one of five ranges from Jockey’s first ever UK women’s underwear and nightwear collection.
The collection embodies all the customary aspects of the Jockey brand - first-class, exquisitely processed cotton and microfibres, flattering cuts and natural and understated comfort. Available in five distinctive ranges: Y-Front, signature stretch, cotton stretch, micro fibre and sheer lace.
Ruth Stevens, Jockey spokesman, said: “The 75th anniversary is a momentous occasion for an iconic brand so we wanted to do something that would be fitting. Y-Fronts are now available for women, for the first time – a brand new approach which should see the Y-Front’s continued popularity throughout the 21st Century.”
History of the Y-front…
The Y-Front has been at the forefront of men’s underwear since it was born in 1934 when Arthur Kneibler, vice president of marketing at Coopers Inc. (as Jockey was then called) was inspired by a picture of a man in a sleek, supportive swimsuit and drove the company’s design team to create a strange, new kind of underwear called “the brief”.
Unlike any underwear at that time, it provided men with “masculine support”, available at that time only through the use of an athletic supporter, sometimes called a “jock strap”. To discretely describe the function of the new-fangled underwear, it was called the Jockey (JOCK-ey) brief.
This design was to change the world’s underwear beyond recognition and was so cutting edge that the first patterns were developed in collaboration with a urologist and underwent extensive testing before being approved for production.
The Y-Front first became widely popular when managers at the Marshall Field store in Chicago banned it from a window display, saying it was ridiculous to flaunt such a skimpy design in the middle of winter. Before the display could be removed, 600 pairs had been sold and perhaps the most iconic piece of male underwear had begun its career.
The women’s and men’s Y-Front ranges are available from Needundies.com
