Working 9 to 5…Fashion Designer Ziad Ghanem speaks out and reveals one of his special moments this month…Getting Bishi With It…
I love Bishi’s music, in a time when most new artists make tunes that sound like a Nokia ring tone Bishi's music is a breath of fresh air - classical with modern appeal. I was so happy and honored when she asked me to design her costume for her performance at Trafalgar Square celebrating St George’s Day.
I first met her on the set of a photo shoot for Drama Magazine where we discussed further ideas and collaborations. It was kind of love and admiration from first sight; a kind person with beautiful skin that reflected the light and eyes full of life - plus an amazing voice, when I first heard her sing my heart missed a beat.
My fascination with the Union Jack, page 3 girls and football hooligans all came together to inspire my concept of the dress. I created something that I call “the Big Brother syndrome”. Influenced by patriotism and reality…realistic art is enjoyable because we see in it our own reflection. I wanted to keep the dress simple and pop-tastic…something the Spice Girls would have worn on St George’s day 15 years ago. I mixed the Indian flag with the Union Jack to keep the message simple: multi-cultural modern Britain ennit!!!
St George’s Day was a great celebration and a lot of fun. In the middle of Trafalgar Square stood Britain’s latest talent Bishi, draped from head to toe in a little something I made earlier! Of course her performance was so spectacular she almost blew Nelson’s head off…
Until next month.
